MARGARITA YBARRA
MAY 28, 1963 - MARCH 4, 2024
Margarita Ybarra, known to most as Margaret, was born in San Antonio, Texas, and lived to the age of sixty. After graduating from high school Margaret went on to receive an associate degree, when she soon after realized her calling was to be a public servant and trained with the San Antonio police force. After training, she went on to become a peace officer for over 6 years at St. Mary's University. This is where she met the love of her life, Amelia Sotomayor. Mollie was a cook with the catering department at St. Mary's University when their paths crossed-falling in love first with her cooking, and then her love-turning into a beautiful marriage of thirty years.
Regrettably, after an accidental severe work injury, and various operations, Margaret's work ethic pushed her to continue a life of service work as a peace officer and dispatcher with Alamo Community Colleges District, at St. Phillips College Campus. Margaret worked there for fifteen-plus years, devoted to serving even with illness, until she was duty-bound to retire with continuing medical issues. Although Margaret needed to retire, her ACCD Police family continues to hold her in regard, for her drive, her cheerful outlook, and team spirit, and for showing tenacity even through continued ailments.
Although Margaret was energetic in her work, outside of work Margaret was an extrovert who loved to socialize with friends. Over the years she was active in local pool hall leagues, making scores of lasting friendships over her lifetime. Margaret even taught some nieces and nephews how to play pool over the years. Margaret, a very easygoing and empathic person was always known to be the aunt that all the kids in the family could go to with a problem when they were growing up, undeniably earning her place as the favorite aunt and well-loved stepmom to her partner Mollie's children. She was always ready with a smile for anyone who seemed downtrodden, Margaret did not complain about her struggles.
Margaret was also an active advocate for people in the queer community, always defending peoples' rights to live and love peacefully, participating in community events, and living her life openly and freely as an example to others. Margaret always maintained a positive outlook on her life, always grateful for the blessings of family and friends, and each new day. Margaret's smile and infectious laugh could make the grumpiest person smile and make a person's day better with her presence.
Margaret's Catholic faith and devotion to our Virgin de Guadalupe played a significant role in her spiritual life. Her spiritual devotion helped Margaret to always have the gift of joy in the Lord. Margarita's parents and various family members precede her in eternal life together, and she now rests peacefully with her mother, father, and brothers.
