Luis Marcio Marti Obituary

• Luis Marcio Marti passed away peacefully on January 2, 2025, in San Antonio, TX at the age of 97. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather who will be sorely missed but is now at peace in the arms of the Lord and reunited with his loving wife of 52 years.

  Born in Guantanamo, Cuba on August 18, 1927, Luis was a quiet, smart and introspective child. His family relocated to Havana, Cuba in 1937 where Luis eventually attended Havana University and graduated with his law degree in 1951.

  Luis was known around town as an eligible bachelor but had not found a reason to settle down until he met the love of his life – fellow lawyer, Theresa Mirta Causa. They married on December 20, 1959. While on their honeymoon in Mexico City, Fidel Castro, a fellow law student of Luis', overthrew the Cuban government. Luis and Mirta returned to Cuba to find their former life turned upside down – their new apartment in which they'd yet to live and all of their new possessions had been seized and looted. Luis and Mirta went to live with her parents, and ten months later, their daughter Teresita (Teri) Pilar Marti was born. However, the joy was short lived, as three days later the Castro regime seized all banks and assets. Luis and Mirta then made a bold decision that would change the course of their lives and their legacy forever. When Teri was six weeks old, Luis and Mirta packed one suitcase and five dollars and left to seek political asylum in the United States.

  Unable to practice law in the U.S., both Luis and Mirta took up trade jobs. With incredible tenacity and work ethic, they built a prosperous new life for their family upon the foundation of their deep love for each other. In October 1970, Luis and Mirta welcomed their second child, Luis Anibal Marti.

  Luis lived many happy decades in the San Antonio area with his family. They were founding members of the St. Matthews Catholic Church. They also built a thriving community and lifelong friendships with fellow Cubans who lived in and around San Antonio. Luis was well-known for playing bartender at the many parties thrown by the Cuban community and was especially famous for his signature drink "the breeze of Mexico." When the time came, Luis was also overjoyed to be a grandfather and was incredibly involved and active in his grandchildrens' lives.

  Luis' strongest calling in life was as a devoted, loving husband. He adored his wife, Mirta. When she was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's at the age of 62, Luis made the selfless decision to care for her at home. He did so for 14 years as she battled the disease which ultimately took her life on July 13, 2011.

  Luis was diagnosed with the same disease at the age of 89. For many years, he was cared for by his family who strived to show him the same love and support he gave his wife. When he was unable to maintain his independence, Luis was placed in the care of the loving staff at Regent Care Center of Oakwell Farms where he lived out his remaining days.

  Luis was known as a gentle, peaceful and caring individual. He was never the loudest person in the room (although his wife was), but he had a quiet and quirky sense of humor that still leaves his family laughing at his sayings today. While his passing leaves an irreplaceable void in the lives of his children and grandchildren, his legacy will live on forever, as will the lessons he taught them about perseverance, love and devotion.

  Luis is preceded in death by his wife Mirta Marti, mother, Luisa Baro, stepfather, Frederico Baro, and father Marcio Marti. He is survived by his children Teri (Albert) Jacob and Luis (Tina) Marti, grandchildren, Andrew (Danielle) Jacob, Monica (Daniel) Gomez, Stella Marti and Marcio Marti, great grandchildren Garrett Hutchins, Charlotte Hutchins, Luka Jacob and Nicolas Gomez, half-sisters Margot Perez, Eloisa "Nena" Zarragoitia and Catalina Martin, as well as numerous other relatives and dear friends.

  A gravesite ceremony will be held in Luis' honor at the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery on January 14, 2025, at 10:30 am. Grave site section 2, lot 8. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association in his name to help fund research for a cure.
